Expert Consulting for Your Company
Hello again,
This post is by John Miller, President of Passport Software, about the history and development of Passport Software’s business philosophy and expert consulting. We hope you find it useful.
Passport Software’s consultants are knowledgeable, caring and experienced. Our goal is to listen to customers describe the business issues they face and understand their challenges. We offer specific applications to solve their issues or provide custom programming to meet their specific needs. There are few companies today that are willing or able to do this.
Andersen
In 1976, I had two job offers, one from Touche Ross and another from Arthur Andersen, two of what then was the “Big Eight” accounting and consulting firms.
Touche would do a consulting project and deliver a report with recommendations on what the client company should do to improve the areas that had been studied. But they did not actually do the work to implement those suggestions. That was up to the client company and if things went south, that was their problem/responsibility.
Andersen had a very different approach. They actually said that their business philosophy took total responsibility for implementing their recommendations, if the client chose to hire them to do that. They pointed out that it “kept them honest” about the recommendations that they made, knowing that they very well may have to implement them.
Passport Software
Passport Software has this approach too. We consult with clients and recommend solutions to address the areas that are important to them. And, we follow through. Failure is not an option, if the client is willing to commit the resources and do their part in working the project.
We require that they participate because we are developing “their system” not ours, and they will need to operate it when it is finished, so they must participate every step of the way.
This is a “no-excuses” approach. We tell client management that there will be challenges to overcome and that we and they will need to work together to make the project go right. If they commit to that, we will be there to do our part to make sure it does go right.
I hope this gives you a sense of the higher-end services that we offer.
In writing this, I asked myself why I chose this path, and I guess it probably goes back to my father, who, with his brother, owned his own company that sold furniture and did refinishing work, custom upholstery and custom curtains. I worked for him growing up and certainly grew to respect a job well done, as in “do it well or not at all.”
First and foremost, my goal has been to provide excellent software and services to help small business succeed. I’m grateful I’ve been successful at both, building a company that provides great software and services while also providing a positive working environment for our employees.
